Keeping Travis healthy: DGMC hosts inaugural community health fair

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- David Grant USAF Medical Center hosted the inaugural 2026 DGMC Community Health Fair at Travis Air Force Base, California, Oct. 23, 2026.
The fair began with a 5K run, aiming to promote good health and fitness. “By kicking off with a 5K, the event directly supported the DoW's [Department of War’s] increased push for a healthier, more fit force while lowering barriers to care through open, interactive community outreach," said U.S. Air Force Maj. Candace Melendez, 60th Medical Group emergency room nurse.
According to Melendez, the fair aimed to draw Tricare beneficiaries. It featured 20 educational and interactive booths that provided an activity-based environment for beneficiaries to learn about the resources provided to them. Moreover, the 5K run featured a Halloween theme, inviting participants to wear Halloween costumes as they ran the course.
In addition to the activity-based booths, there were seven screening booths that allowed participants to learn about health conditions to which they may be susceptible and schedule appointments to possibly identify illness.
Melendez said the health fair measured turnout using two methods. The first measured the number of attendees who registered for the 5K run, and the second method counted the number of raffle tickets submitted before the conclusion of the event.
The 5K drew over 100 participants, said Melendez. Additionally, 142 raffle tickets were submitted.
In order to submit a ticket for the raffle, attendees had to collect 16 stickers from booths across the fair. This aimed to ensure that the raffle was only available to people who actively participated in the event.
For Melendez, the key takeaway was that 142 participants were able to experience the fair. Their participation supported DGMC’s goal of increasing the organization’s involvement in the community and directly showcased the range of services and resources available.
