Sheriff's Office Launches Community Services Liaison Program
According to Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff's Office has launched a new Community Services Liaison program, funded by a $175,000 grant from Opioid Settlement funds distributed through the Washington County Community Services Board. The program embeds a qualified mental health professional within the agency to provide direct, follow-up support to residents experiencing a mental health crisis or substance use disorder.
The initiative advances the Sheriff's Office "Community First" strategy, which focuses on connecting residents with services and resources beyond traditional law enforcement response.
How the Program Works
Deputies are frequently dispatched to calls that involve an underlying mental health or substance use need. Under the new program, once a deputy makes initial contact, the Community Services Liaison follows up directly with the individual to connect them with ongoing care.
The liaison works alongside community providers and the ASCEND Wellness LEAMHRS (Law Enforcement Addiction and Mental Health Referral Systems) program to coordinate referrals and long-term support, helping ensure residents receive specialized care rather than a single, one-time response.
