Boil Water Order in Place for Part of the City of Oswego

The Oswego County Health Department announced a boil water order is in place in the southwest quadrant of the city of Oswego, specifically in the area of West Utica Street and Hillside Avenue, including Morningstar Residential Center located at 17 Sunrise Dr., Oswego.

All water users in the area, including staff and residents of the senior living facility, should boil any water used for drinking and cooking.

According to the City of Oswego Water Department, a water main break occurred at 1 a.m. this morning, Aug. 25, at that intersection and personnel from the City of Oswego Department of Public Works are on-site performing repairs. Once the work is completed, the city will collect bacteriological samples to confirm that the water is safe to drink.

It is anticipated that the boil water order will remain in effect until at least Thursday, Aug. 27, after testing confirms there is no contamination. The Health Department will notify the public when it has been lifted.

Residents are advised to bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute and cool before using. They can also use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills most bacteria and other organisms in the water.
