With ‘Blue Monday’ Around the Corner, WellSpace@Work Offers Help for Seasonal Blues in the Workplace

WellSpace Maine Logo

As seasonal blues start to take a toll, WellSpace@Work’s mental health counseling provides support for businesses and their employees

PORTLAND, MAINE, UNITED STATES, January 16, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — In addition to being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the third Monday in January is also less commonly known as “Blue Monday.” Blue Monday is widely perceived to be the most depressing day of the year based on a variety of factors including the darkness of winter, the lowering levels of vitamin D in our bodies, and the point at which our commitment to our new year’s intentions begin to wane. The recognition of this day has built momentum over the past several years, boosting awareness of depression and other mental health issues related to seasonal changes. Our awareness of depression and other mental health concerns is especially heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has the potential to create an upcoming mental health crisis throughout the country, including in the workplace.

“The symptoms of winter blues and the more severe Seasonal Affective Disorder (also called Depression with a seasonal pattern) usually occur during the fall and winter and improve with the arrival of spring. January and February tend to be the most difficult months for those experiencing depression related to seasonal changes. Many people continue to face the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health which makes this year more challenging for those with winter blues or SAD. With all the stressors employees are facing today, offering a readily accessible, barrier-free path to counseling is a significant benefit that employers can consider,” said Lindy Graham, LCSW.

In Maine, 35% of people suffer from winter blues, 15-19% from mild cases of SAD and 9% from SAD. Seasonal blues are also shown to have a higher impact on people living in locations further from the equator, including Maine, as winter daylight hours are fewer. This seasonal depression can result in feelings of sadness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, low energy and other symptoms that can impact employees’ experience and performance in the workplace. COVID-related stress only makes the situation worse, with nearly 70 percent of workers affected.

WellSpace@Work was created as an avenue for Maine employers to offer access to local, confidential mental health counseling for their employees struggling with the myriad of challenges right now, like winter blues, SAD and COVID-19-related stress. As the seasonal blues intensify with daylight hours remaining short, employers can offer counseling sessions for employees through WellSpace@Work. Using the sessions paid for by their employer, employees can seek the proper treatment for their winter blues with therapists from WellSpace@Work. WellSpace@Work’s clinicians are well versed in the different treatment methods for seasonal blues and SAD which allows them to create customized treatment plans.

Treatment of winter blues benefits the employee by reducing the severity of symptoms and lifting the heaviness of depression. Through WellSpace@Work, employers demonstrate that they are committed not only to their employees' safety but their overall wellbeing as well.

Hidden Benefits When It Comes to Board Games

Boy learning to play Endless Games’ Traffic Cop Game

The Korner’d Challenge Game from Endless Games

Traffic Cop from Endless Games

Some hidden benefits of Endless Games’ board games and card games have been exposed by special educators and parents of special needs children.

…we discovered that many of our games have elements that reveal some amazing talents, social skills, as well as physical and mental exercises.”

— Brian Turtle, National Sales Manager of Endless Games, Inc.

MATAWAN, NJ, UNITED STATES, January 15, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — When it comes to exciting, original, new board games, Endless Games has plenty of options for people, but in addition to the fun, some extra benefits are in play too.

Some hidden benefits of Endless Games’ board games and card games have been exposed by special educators and parents of special needs children.

“We didn’t set out to design games that specifically catered to special needs, but we discovered that many of our games have elements that reveal some amazing talents, social skills, as well as physical and mental exercises,” Brian Turtle, National Sales Manager of Endless Games, explained.

Recently, Endless Games’ The Korner’d Challenge, Dropsy Card Game and Mexican Train were announced as top toys for 2020 and featured in the Autism Live Holiday Guide. In 2019 the guide honorees included Traffic Cop Game and The Floor Is Lava.

Possibly the most interesting case is Endless Games’ The Korner’d Challenge Game, a puzzle that is also a game. This game revealed some curious discoveries during its play testing. The object of Korner’d is to be the first player to place all of his/her color or picture patterned tiles to match to a game board. “What we discovered was that Korner’d involves spatial relationships and matching. For many on the Autism Spectrum this is an area of strength. Young kids on the spectrum easily beat older children and adults at this game,” Turtle explained. “You could see that it was a tremendous boost in self-esteem and self-confidence.”

Therapists and parents have cited that Endless Games’ The Floor Is Lava helps with sensory issues as well as physical therapy, such as maintaining balance. Games like Traffic Cop, Red Light Green Light 1-2-3, and Dropsy have been praised for learning left-and-right, following instructions, motor skills, executive functioning and respect for authority.

Often, Endless Games’ Mancala is used in schools for math practice, while Endless Games classic games, Chess, Checkers and Backgammon are all used in logic and strategic thought practices.

“I’m proud that our games bring so much fun to people. The fact that they also help so many people with their challenges is incredibly rewarding,” Turtle said. “At Endless Games, we’ll keep making new games and we can’t wait to bring even more fun and benefits to all people.”

Other games from Endless Games include Card Sharks, Camera Roll, AKA, Jeopardy card game, Wheel of Fortune card game, Password, Sleepover Party Game, Name 5, Everybody Knows, 60 Second Slam, Horror Trivia, What Comes To Mind?, and Encore, among others.

About Endless Games: Founded in 1996 by industry veterans Mike Gasser, Kevin McNulty and game inventor Brian Turtle, Endless Games specializes in games that offer classic entertainment and hours of fun at affordable prices. The three have an uncanny ability for discovering and developing hit games, having been a part in past successes Trivial Pursuit™, Pictionary® and Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon™. The mission of the Endless Games team and partners is to produce high quality entertainment in board games that are quick and easy to learn and offer “Endless” play value to all people. Greg Vigna, MD, JD: Brachial Plexus Injuries… Early Referral to Leading Experts

Dr. Greg Vigna

Dr. Greg Vigna

The Vigna Law Group comments on physicians' untimely diagnoses of brachial plexus, resulting in missed opportunities for high-quality treatment.

Too many adult patients miss out on the opportunity for the state of the art treatments involving peripheral nerve surgery because of insurance barriers and lack of personal resources.”

— Dr. Greg Vigna

SANTA BARBARA , CALIFORNIA , UNITED STATES, January 15, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — Of those admitted to trauma hospitals with multiple injuries from motor vehicle accidents, one percent will have brachial plexus injuries. It is not uncommon for these injuries to be diagnosed in rehabilitation hospitals as there are often other associated injuries that make this diagnosis difficult such as traumatic brain injury, cervical spinal cord injury, or internal thoracic injuries that require prolonged ventilation.

The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that combine from the fifth cervical nerve root to the first thoracic nerve root to provide essential functions to the shoulder, arm, and hand. These injuries are most commonly seen in young males and cause devastating neurologic deficits that cause life-long disabilities. Stretch injuries are the most common injury to the brachial plexus and occur when the shoulder is pressed down, while at the same time, the head is pushed up and away from the shoulder. This stretching of the nerves of the plexus can cause damage to the network of nerves or in the most severe form, cause the nerves to be torn.

State of the art brachial plexus management is only available at a handful of centers in this country, so access to care is limited. Early referral is mandatory as the window of opportunity to benefit from peripheral nerve surgery is generally 3 months to 9 months following a brachial plexus injury. After that period of time reconstruction procedures are limited to tendon transfers to improve function.

Greg Vigna, MD, JD, national neurological injury attorney, practicing physician, and Attorney perspective:
“Too many adult patients miss out on the opportunity for the state of the art treatments involving peripheral nerve surgery because of insurance barriers and lack of personal resources. Complicating this is that simply physicians often wait too long before making the referral. This is less of an issue with birth injury brachial plexus injuries as referral patterns have been established for early diagnosis and treatment.

Not all providers are equal and as a physician and testifying expert for patients with brachial plexus injury there is a huge variation regarding the care that has been provided to similarly injured patients. It is important for patients and families to do their research and go to providers who have the capabilities to provide all of the necessary treatments for peripheral nerve injury including neurolysis, nerve transfers, nerve grafting, and tendon and muscle transfers. Doctors tend to offer treatment that they have been trained to provide, and in the case of serious peripheral nerve injury you want a physician with all the skills who can provide the most appropriate procedure given the neuromuscular status of the patient.”

Damages awarded in brachial plexus injuries may be very substantial. The driving factors include the financial capabilities of the defendants, the resulting disability, loss earning capacity, and future care required.

Greg Vigna, MD, JD, national neurological injury attorney, national pharmaceutical injury attorney, Board Certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Certified Life Care Planner, represents the neurologically injured with leading trial attorneys across the country. The focus of his law firm includes cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, and brachial plexus injury from trauma and birth injury.

Dr. Vigna is a California and Washington DC lawyer who focuses on catastrophic neurological injuries caused by transvaginal mesh devices including pudendal neuralgia, obturator neuralgia, ilioinguinal neuralgia, and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. His cases are filed around the country with Martin Baughman, a Dallas Texas firm. Ben Martin and Laura Baughman are national pharmaceutical injury trial attorneys in Dallas, Texas.

What is a Ventral Hernia, and How is it Treated?

USA, January 15, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — When tissues bulge through a weak opening in your abdomen, that’s referred to as a ventral hernia. Any point on your abdominal wall can be a candidate for this to happen.

You are at risk of a hernia any time you lift a heavy object, but increased risk comes from pregnancy, obesity, prior hernias, abdominal surgeries, bowel injuries, and a family hernia history. Many people are also born with a congenital defect that will cause the abdominal wall to be thin from birth.

Symptoms of a ventral hernia can take time to occur and may in fact never show. Symptoms that do present include mild abdominal discomfort, full-on abdominal pain, skin and tissue bulging outward in the abdominal area, vomiting and nausea.

These may increase when standing or lifting heavy objects and you may see a bulging growth in the abdomen that feels painful to touch.

Diagnosis of the hernia can require an abdominal ultrasound, an abdominal CT scan or an abdominal MRI scan in order to assess the damage to your abdominal wall and signs that indicate if you have a ventral hernia.

If you have a ventral hernia, you are going to require surgery. Not treating a ventral hernia leads them to grow until they cause major complications.

If left untreated, a ventral hernia can grow enlarged, and they become more and more difficult to treat as they do. The swelling can trap the contents of the hernia, which is referred to as incarceration. This can then cause strangulation, where the blood to the tissues is cut off and the tissue can die if not treated.

There are three options for repairing a ventral hernia.

Open hernia repair involves an incision made in the abdomen, through which the surgeon will push the tissue back through the abdomen. The surgeon will then sew the affected area up, usually reinforcing it with a synthetic mesh before closing the incision.

In a laproscopic surgery, the surgeon will make several small incisions in the abdomen to send through a small tube equipped with a camera. The surgeon then inserts several tiny instruments through the other incisions to actually repair the hernia, guided by the camera.

Mesh replacement surgery sees a surgeon pushing the tissue back into the proper place, and then sewing in a mesh that reinforces the area and keeps the tissue where it’s supposed to be. This surgery has proven to be effective and long-lasting.

With no complications, the patient may need a few weeks of rest afterwards before they can start their normal activities. Avoid heavy lifting and strain to the abdomen during this time.

Friends of Oakland Animal Services Wins $60K from PetSmart Charities for Pop-Up Clinics for Pets of Unhoused Oaklanders

Monthly Community Vet Clinics Provide Critical Medical Care for Beloved Cats and Dogs

It’s estimated that 25% of unsheltered people are living with animals—and for many, the companionship of an animal may be the only family they have.”

— Ann Dunn, Oakland Animal Services Director

OAKLAND, CA, US, January 15, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ — The harsh winter weather and the dangers of COVID-19 are making the challenges of homelessness in Oakland even more dire—but thanks to a $60,000 grant to Friends of Oakland Animal Services from PetSmart Charities, a little relief is on the way this Sunday, January 17, for the pets of unhoused Oaklanders. Funded by this grant, a veterinary team from Oakland Animal Services will be treating pets at one of the City of Oakland’s temporary, low-barrier housing sites for people experiencing homelessness. Resident pets who may have never before been to a veterinarian will get free onsite treatments for straightforward conditions like skin allergies and ear infections; animals requiring more extensive care for issues like mass removals or amputations will be scheduled for treatment at OAS the upcoming week, all at no cost to their guardian.

What does access to care mean for Oakland’s pets living with guardians experiencing homelessness? At the team’s pilot pop-up event in late November 2020, Little Abner, a 10-month-old terrier mix, arrived with a fishhook in his mouth—an unfortunate souvenir of a walk taken near the marina with his owner the previous night. Abner’s owner heard through word of mouth about the free medical treatments being provided and brought him right over. Abner was taken to OAS so he could be sedated and the fishhook painlessly removed. He was reunited with his grateful guardian a few hours later.

“It’s estimated that 25% of unsheltered people are living with animals—and for many, the companionship of an animal may be the only family they have,” says Oakland Animal Services Director Ann Dunn. “This generous grant means that OAS will be able to help unhoused Oakland residents and their pets at locations that are accessible and designed for their support. We’re grateful that PetSmart Charities shares our commitment to equitable care that helps keep our city’s pets safe and healthy, with the people who love them.”

“The power of pets is transformative, and is magnified during difficult times,” said Kate Atema, senior manager, grants initiatives at PetSmart Charities. “We are proud to support Oakland Animal Services in keeping Oakland area pets and people together by reducing barriers to accessible veterinary care. This event will be a great benefit to both pets and pet parents in need.”

Oakland Animal Services is Oakland’s only “open admissions” shelter, accepting all of Oakland’s homeless, injured, orphaned, unwanted, lost, abandoned and mistreated animals.
