Local Health Departments Work to Protect Communities During the Opioid Crisis

The National Association of County and City Health Officials Supports the Surgeon General’s Call to Erase Stigma
Associated with Opioid Addiction

WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, September 21, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — U.S. Surgeon General Jerome M. Adams has released the report Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General’s Spotlight on Opioids, calling for a cultural shift in the way Americans talk about the opioid crisis, and recommending actions that can prevent and treat opioid misuse and promote recovery.

“Addiction is a brain disease that touches families across America – even my own,” said Dr. Adams. “We need to work together to put an end to stigma.”

The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), representing nearly 3,000 local health departments, wholeheartedly supports Dr. Adam’s approach. Local health departments are on the front lines of this national public health crisis, working to protect and support communities across the country.

The Surgeon General is calling on all individuals to do the following:

• Talk about opioid misuse. Have a conversation about preventing drug misuse and overdose.

• Be safe. Only take opioid medications as prescribed, ensure that medication is stored in a secure place, and dispose of unused medication properly.

• Understand pain and talk with your healthcare provider. Treatments other than opioids can be effective in managing pain.

• Understand that addiction is a chronic disease. With the right treatment and supports, people do recover.

• Be prepared. Get and learn how to use naloxone, an opioid overdose-reversing drug.

“Local health departments can play a crucial role in raising awareness and educating their communities about opioid addiction, effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment, access to care and resources for those struggling,” said NACCHO Chief Executive Officer Lori Tremmel Freeman. “They are also important community partners, working across other sectors within the community, including hospital systems, healthcare delivery, mental health and substance abuse, social services, emergency services, and law enforcement, to address this epidemic.”

Dr. David Anthony Miranda reflects on medical career highlights

Dr David Anthony Miranda

During three decades in medicine, Dr. David Anthony Miranda has traveled the length and breadth of the U.S.

WESTLAKE HILLS, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, September 21, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — An experienced medical professional with a drive to care for underserved, predominantly rural populations, it was this desire which led to Dr. David Anthony Miranda's expertise as an emergency locum tenens physician. In almost 30 years, the doctor has spent time in California, New York, Mississippi, Texas, and elsewhere across the U.S.

"As an undergraduate at UCLA, the University of California, Los Angeles, I used to volunteer tutoring science and math to disadvantaged high school students in the, then turbulent South-Central district of the city, exasperated by the recent Rodney King shooting and subsequent riots and looting," reveals Dr. Miranda. “During my summers I volunteered at San Francisco General Hospital working in the Emergency Department, helping its large homeless and indigent population. That’s where I first felt a desire to become an emergency room doctor,” he adds. Later attending medical school in New York City at Cornell University Medical College, followed by a residency at North Shore University Hospital, the doctor then chose to complete his trauma rotations at Lincoln Hospital, the large county hospital in the South Bronx district of New York.

"Located in the crime-ridden South Bronx of the 1990s," says the emergency locum physician, "I found enrichment in taking care of people from economically stressed and medically underserved communities."

Dr. Miranda then took his first job out of residency in South Mississippi, working within rural populations and with strictly limited specialty back-up. "Here, I honed my ability to become independent in practice, and thus a highly self-reliant emergency medical physician," he adds.

In 2008, he was chosen by his employer, a Texas-based provider of Emergency Medicine services that he’d already been working with for two years, to help start their locums division. “Because I was efficient with patient management, dependable with my assignments, and flexible with my schedule, I was the ideal candidate for them to choose to help make the locums division a success,” Dr. Miranda adds.

Having already worked at over ten different emergency departments throughout Central, North, and East Texas, Dr. Miranda went on to further hone his ability to rapidly adapt and overcome, by either starting up new contracts or turning around existing, distressed agreements. Says Dr. Miranda, wrapping up, "this is exactly why I was selected by my prior employer to run their locums division, as it's very much what I do best."

Dr. Miranda’s prior employer has been bought out by a larger emergency medicine group, a pattern of consolidation that’s trending in the industry of Emergency Medicine. He now continues to work part-time traveling to help out small rural emergency departments. “ That’s where the real need is for coverage, the
big cities already have enough doctors wanting to work. It’s the rural communities that are suffering because of Emergency Physician shortage,“ he says.

In addition to practicing Medicine, Dr. David Miranda is also a partner of Fit-Life MD, a physician-owned medical wellness and fitness clinic in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Miranda's other interests include taking care of his own personal health with daily exercise, investing in the stock market, as well as the clinical teaching of medical students and residents.

The best advice for any parent, coach, trainer, or teacher is, “When in doubt keep them out.””

— Shana De Caro

PLEASANTVILLE, NEW YORK, USA, September 21, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — On Friday, September 21st, National Concussion Awareness Day® will raise awareness about the dangers and consequences of concussions through local educational events, social media, fundraisers, and expert discussions in the media.

To mark the day, nationally recognized New York brain injury lawyers De Caro & Kaplen, LLP, have written an open letter to parents of children involved in sports. The letter, published on the firm’s website, highlights the serious nature of concussions, the signs and symptoms, and what parents should do if they suspect their child has suffered a brain injury.

In an excerpt from the letter, Michael Kaplen, a partner in the firm, and three-term past president of the Brain Injury Association of New York State, explains a seemingly minor accident can cause serious injury to the brain but is usually invisible. According to Kaplen, “A concussion is a brain injury that must be taken seriously. Working with brain injury victims for over thirty-five years, we’ve seen many people just don’t believe an injury to the brain could have resulted from a minor collision, when there is no loss of consciousness, or no physical contact with the skull.”

Kaplen continued, “Following a concussion, individuals may appear to be normal because there are no visible signs of brain injury. But, a brain injury is not a broken bone, and brain injury victims do not always have physical symptoms.”

In a poll by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, nearly 9 out of 10 adults in the US failed to correctly define a concussion. While a study in the Journal of Athletic Training, found that 50% of concussions go unreported.

Concussion symptoms commonly include any one or more of the following: headache, confusion, difficulty remembering or paying attention, balance problems or dizziness, feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy, feeling irritable, more emotional, or “down”, nausea or vomiting, sensitive to light or noise, double or blurry vision, slowed reaction time, sleep problems, or loss of consciousness.

According to Shana De Caro, a senior partner at De Caro & Kaplen, LLP, and secretary of the Brain Injury Association of America, “Concussions can be difficult to recognize as symptoms vary from individual to individual. We recommend that parents seek professional advice and assistance anytime a concussion is suspected. Any child with a suspected concussion should not be permitted to resume athletic activities until properly evaluated by a trained professional.” De Caro continued, the best advice for any parent, coach, trainer, or teacher is, “When in doubt keep them out.”

National Concussion Awareness Day® is recognized on the third Friday of each September yearly.

De Caro & Kaplen’s letter to parents can be found on the firm’s website at https://brainlaw.com/brain-injuries/sports-concussions/

De Caro & Kaplen, LLP is a nationally recognized personal injury law firm concentrating their practice on representing victims of head trauma caused by car, bus, and truck collisions, pedestrians struck by vehicles, unsafe construction sites and buildings, and brain damage caused by hospital or medical malpractice. De Caro & Kaplen, LLP is the only law firm in the nation whose partners have both been elected to chair the American Association of Justice, Traumatic Brain Injury Litigation Group. The firm is recognized as “Preferred Lawyers” by the Brain Injury Association of America.

Facial hair have become scientifically proven to make men more attractive. Not only that, but there are also plenty of hidden benefits on health as some studies

İSTANBUL, MERTER, TURKEY, September 21, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — Facial hair have become scientifically proven to make men more attractive. Not only that, but there are also plenty of hidden benefits on health as some studies found that beard can block up to 95% of the harmful UV rays, as well as protecting you from basal-cell carcinomas (skin cancer) and also inhibit noticeable signs of ageing around your face, head and neck.
Having a beard can also work as a filter especially if you suffer from dust or pollen allergies.

But, what if you were born without the genes to grow a full beard? Here’s one piece of reassuring news: You were born at the right time to fix that!
Like Hair Transplant, beard transplant has become a new fashion around the world. With the use of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique, experienced doctors pick grafts
from areas in your head that are resistant to male pattern balding and transfer it onto areas of your face where hair is absent, the operation lasts up to 4 hours depending on how many grafts need to be transplanted, but in order to get perfect natural look, you need to be under skilled hands who understand the aesthetics and patterns of male beard growth.

According to research almost 70% of beard transplant patients prefer to go to Turkey. For instance, Natural Hair Turkey’s experts who are specialized in hair and beard transplant, say that: ‘’Most of our beard transplant patients are coming from many regions around the world because, we have some original solutions that fit their situations and if the patient comes for beard transplant it takes him only 3 days to go back to his normal life, but the most important thing is that we are using FUE technique, by using this technology the discomfort and signs of surgery will disappear in one week and the patient will have a natural looking results.’’

There is a direct relationship between being represented by the nation's most skilled mesothelioma attorneys and a diagnosed person receiving the very best possible financial compensation results."”

— North Dakota Mesothelioma Victims Center

NEW YORK, NEW YORK, USA, September 21, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — The North Dakota Mesothelioma Victims Center is urging a US Navy Veteran who has just been diagnosed with mesothelioma in North Dakota or their family to please call them anytime at 800-714-0303 so they do not mistakenly hire an inexperienced lawyer/law firm and in doing so shortchange themselves on financial compensation. As the group would like to explain anytime, "There is a direct relationship between being represented by some of the nation's most skilled mesothelioma attorneys and a diagnosed person receiving the very best possible financial compensation results." http://NorthDakota.MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

According to the North Dakota Mesothelioma Victims Center, "The mesothelioma lawyers we suggest frequently get million-dollar settlements for their US Navy Veteran clients with mesothelioma-especially if the Veteran was exposed to asbestos in a ship’s engine room, engineering, or if they served on a nuclear submarine as we would like to discuss at 800-714-0303.

"When it comes to mesothelioma compensation for a US Navy Veteran, it is incredibly important the lawyers you hire have years of experience with Navy Veteran mesothelioma compensation claims. When we mention shortchanged we are referring to hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost compensation-or more." http://NorthDakota.MesotheliomaVictimsCenter.Com

Aimee Cabo Nikolov Empowers Others to Stand Up Against Abuse and Violence, #metooasachild

According to Kids At Risk Foundation one in four girls and one in six boys is sexually abused by 18 years old. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 35% of women in the United States have experienced domestic violence, and all too often, this violence occurs in a cycle that is difficult for victims to break. But Aimee Cabo Nikolov was determined to be an exception to this pattern.

Growing up, Nikolov was at the center of a high-profile battle in the media in Miami that was dubbed “The Case from Hell.” This case was about the long-term sexual abuse Nikolov endured as a child. This case eventually tore her childhood family apart, shaping her early childhood and adolescent years.

Nikolov states, “The suffering that I experienced has shaped the person that I have become.”

From different foster homes to becoming homeless at one point in her life, the birth of Nikolov’s first daughter changed everything for her. When her daughter was born, Nikolov became determined to give her a different upbringing than the one she had known. She fought endless custody battles as well as her own substance abuse, eventually meeting the love of her life and finding strength in her faith to help her overcome any challenge that life presented to her.

Of her journey, Nikolov comments, “I want people to know that if they let God into their life, they can begin to appreciate life more. There is hope. It’s not just suffering, and everything truly does pass.”

With her bachelors in science and nursing, Nikolov and her husband went on to found both a tight-knit family and a successful company together.

“I felt that I could help others by sharing my story,” adds Nikolov, who is now releasing a book about her life’s experiences. “I was praying and I knew it was time to write this book.”

“I look at my life, and in spite of the adversity that I have overcome, my life is a success because I am happy to go to work and I am happy to come home,” says Nikolov. “For me, prayer has been a source of strength and I now see that suffering is not necessarily a bad thing.”

Nikolov’s memoir offers an important message of hope and resilience for readers, recounting how she overcame great adversity to ultimately live a fulfilling life.

“Love is the Answer, God is the Cure” is Nikolov’s first book. It is now available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in Paperback for $17.98 and as an e-Book for $3.99. Also available in Books and Books, Coral Gables. Book launch event will be at Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables on 09/23/18 at 6:30 PM.

Vincent Fedele looks at high cost of healthcare in the U.S.

Vincent Paul Fedele

The World Health Organization repeatedly ranks the U.S. healthcare system as the highest in cost globally, says Vincent Paul Fedele

FORKS TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA, UNITED STATES, September 20, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ — Over the last decade, the U.S. has spent between 17.1 percent and 17.8 percent of its total annual GDP on health care. This is not only more than any other country in the world, but it's also an amount more than 50 percent greater than any other nation worldwide. "The U.S. is famed for over-spending on health care," suggests Vincent P. Fedele, a businessman and father of two from Easton, Pennsylvania. "Drugs in the U.S. are more expensive, and doctors get paid more, but it also goes much deeper than that," he explains.

Vincent Fedele goes on to mention that hospital services and diagnostic tests also cost more in the U.S. than elsewhere in the world, while significant funds routinely go toward planning, regulation, and management of medical services at an administrative level. The impassioned businessman is keen to stress, however, that the most significant difference between the U.S. healthcare system and systems in other countries is pricing. Fedele points out how medical professionals earn considerably more in the U.S. than overseas. General physicians in the U.S. currently make more than double what they would receive in most other first world countries.

Furthermore, while on average administrative costs account for between 1 percent and 3 percent of health care expenditure in most countries, in the U.S. the number, incredibly, is 8 percent. "It's a massive overspend," suggests Fedele, "which both fosters and continues to be perpetuated by so-called 'administrative burden,' according to many doctors and nurses."

Indeed, a recent survey showed that a significant portion of time is lost by doctors to paperwork, such as insurance claims and the reporting of clinical data.

Following a recurring theme, drug spending in the U.S. is also double that of other countries. According to Vincent Fedele, the U.S. is spending around $1,500 per capita on pharmaceuticals. Elsewhere in the developed world, spending in this area is equivalent to less than $750 per capita.

An area of particular concern to the father of two, is resulting individual service costs. On average, surgical procedures in the U.S. cost as much as 4.7 times more than in Europe. Similarly, computed tomography, for example, is currently calculated to be 9.2 times more costly in the U.S. than in neighboring Canada. "It's the same across the board, with an MRI in the U.S. costing 3.2 times what it would in Australia," says Fedele. "Prices must be analyzed and cut where possible."

It's reported that last year, an estimated 22 percent of the U.S. population missed an important medical consultation because they were unable to afford it. "As the country continues to struggle with high healthcare costs," adds Fedele, wrapping up, "I believe it's critical that we take significant steps toward curtailing these expenses as a priority."
